Smith is a San Francisco Bay Area artist well known for his cityscapes and landscapes. He is equally masterful doing figurative and still life paintings. Smith’s contemporary subject elicits a timeless quality. His work reflects a thoughtful understanding for traditional oil painting techniques. His expressive brushwork which is flowing and precise evokes vibrancy and effortless movement that belies his meticulous process of developing his composition. He is influenced by Edouard Manet, contemporary Spanish painter Antonio Lopez Garcia, and painters from the Dutch Golden Age.

Smith attended Santa Barbara City College and received his MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco  CA.. He also trained with Sculptor/Painter Cedric Wentworth. Smith is a full-time instructor in the Fine Arts Department of the university.
